Carnie's Iceman Hoax angers young boy of
Long Ago
In 1976 I attended Arizona State Fair in Phoenix.
The Iceman exhibit was on the midway, and I decided to burn a little
hard-earned allowance money on a glimpse on "The
Missing Link-Is It Man Or Is It Ape-Has Bigfoot Been Captured-Etc".
Inside the show trailer was a latex figure in a glass case, purported to
"represent the scientific find of the century".
I felt ripped off and told the man selling the tickets so. He actually agreed
with me, adding that just a few years before the show actually had a real
Iceman in a glass-topped cooler. It had apparently become "too
tough to travel with", but declined to elaborate. I
figured I'd just kissed half a buck goodbye and went along my way. The
next school day found me talking to my good friend Matt Clifford about the
horrible hosing I'd received at the hands of the carnies, and he told me that
he had seen the Real Iceman exhibit a few years previously at a fair in
Indiana. It had scared the bejabbers out of him and his dad had to bodily
remove him from the trailer. What he described to me is the same thing I have
seen described on this site.
