What Are Free Radicals and Why Should I be Concerned About them?

Free radicals are extremely unstable and highly destructive oxygen molecules. They are "hungry" to gain or "Steal" electrons from other molecules in an attempt to balance their own electron rings. Free radicals attack, damage, and ultimately destroy almost any material. The rusting of metal, the browning of a fresh cut apple, or the hardening of paint are all examples of the constant bombardment of free radicals and the resultant damage.

In the body, their attacks are even more devastating. Free radicals may actually be your worst enemy. They can degrade collagen and even reprogram DNA and change the way your cells replicate themselves.

Free radicals are the common denominator in all de-generative disease!

Many scientists now believe that free radicals are the common denominator in all degenerative diseases. It is certainly worth pointing out that at a November 1993 Conference on antioxidant vitamins, as reported by KTR wire, scientists were asked to rank on a scale of 1 to 10 the weight of current scientific evidence. Many experts ranked the evidence in the 7-9 range. Harman, MD PH.D. says, "Very few individuals, if any, reach their potential maximum life span; they die instead prematurely of a wide variety of disease- the vast majority being "free radical" diseases." As far back as April 26, 1988, in the New York Times, Jane E. Bjrody stated, "Free oxygen radicals, the main type formed in living organisms, have been implicated in recent studies in more than 60 disorders, including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, cataracts, and rheumatoid arthritis. And according to one of the leading theories on ageing, they contribute to the process of becoming old such as wrinkling of the skin, decline of kidney function and increased susceptibility to autoimmune diseases." Since 1988, continued research has only served to validate the serious negative effects of free radicals on our mortal body.

Free radicals are everywhere and occur ironically with things we trust and constantly expose ourselves to. How do you expose yourself to free radicals? You breath. You eat. You bathe. You take a walk in the outdoors under sunlight. You smoke. Every time you breathe you probably take in a million or more free radicals. Much of our food, especially processed food, has significant levels of toxic pesticides and preservatives in it, and corresponding large amounts of free radicals. Many studies show that numerous ingredients used in soap, shampoos, cosmetics, and many cleaners expose and contaminate our body with potentially life-threatening carcinogens and toxins. Even the chlorinated water you shower or bathe in can penetrate the skin and increase your chance of getting arthritis and other negative side effects. In Europe, they know chlorine is poisonous and remember well the effect of chlorine gas.
