Greetings!

(Article taken from the Clan Donachaidh Society of the South News Letter, I995-96)

If your name is one of those listed at the bottom of this sheet you might be a descendant of one of Scotland's oldest and noblest clans.

Your ancestors may include saints, kings, generals, admirals, lawyers, architects, heroes at the Battle of Bannockburn, Preston-Pans, or Culloden Moor, as well as Lexington/Concord, and a number of U.S. Civil War sites, not to mention some cattle thieves (usually English cattle.)

The Clan Donnachaidh (pronounced Donnachie) Society is a world wide organization dedicated to the preservation of our Highland heritage, and especially those things of special importance to Clan Donnachaidh, the Children of Duncan. Our ancestors inhabited lands in the very heart of the Highlands near Blair Atholl. Today the Society maintains a museum of family history at Bruar Falls, not far from the ancient seat of our clan chiefs.

The Clan Donnachaidh Society is world wide with branches in various areas to promote local activities. Our clan branch is the clan Donnachaidh Society of the South and covers North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. We invite you to join us. Membership dues for the branch include membership dues for the Parent Society based in Scotland.

Membership is open to those bearing the names of the recognized septs (family names) which are listed below, and to their descendants and husbands and wives of clan descendants.

If there is something about the skirl of the pipes that stirs your blood, if you suspect that the kilt is really a more manly garment than the trews (pants), if you have a truly Highland zest for life, there is something you can do about it. Put a bit of bracken fern (the clan plant badge) behind your ear, shout out the clan war cry, "Garg'n uair dhuisgear!" (fierce when roused") and send in a membership application form (and check!) Then proudly wear the clan badge , which is the Chief's crest encircled by a strap and buckle bearing the clan motto "Virtutis gloria merces" ("Glory is the reward of virtue").

Septs of Clan Donnachaidh include (with other spellings also) the following:

Robertson, Duncan, Reid, Collier, Donachie, Inches, MacInroy, MacLagan, MacRobert, MacRobie, Roberts, Roy, Stark, etc.

Membership is $30.00 (Includes Parent Society dues for one member and certificate suitable for framing)
