No visit to Portland would be complete without a trip to The Grotto - the internationally renowned Catholic sanctuary that welcomes more than 150,000 guests of all faiths each year.

Visitors are delighted to discover this peaceful 62 acre retreat near the center of the city. Lush green firs tower over colorful rhododendron and other native Pacific Northwest flora as you walk toward the central plaza in. the heart of the sanctuary

Our Lady's Grotto is a magnificent rock cave carved into the base of a 110 foot cliff. A marble replica of Michelangelo's famous Pieta is featured in its center.

While the plaza level with its chapel, gift shop and impressive rock grotto is an inspiring experience, many visitors never realize there's even more to see on the unique grounds above. The incredible view are well worth the small elevator fee to the top.

The manicured gardens of the upper level offer magnificent panoramic vistas of the Columbia River Valley, the Cascade Range and famous Mount St. Helens. Especially impressive is the 180 degree floor to ceiling view through the beveled glass wall of the spectacular Meditation Chapel, featured on the cover of Architecture magazine.

Other highlights include the Servite Monastery, a life-sized bronze of St. Francis of Assisi, the streams and reflection ponds of the Peace Garden and the Via Matris, offering superb examples of wood sculpture.

Conveniently located on Sandy Blvd. (Hwy 30) at NE 85th, 1/2 mile west of I-205, just minutes from downtown or Portland International Airport. Ample free parking for cars and tour busses available.

Open Daily- The Grotto and Gift shop are open daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas days. Summer hours (Mother's Day through Labor Day) are 9am -8pm. Winter hours 9am -5:30pm

Daily Mass is celebrated in the Chapel of Mary; Outdoor Mass is celebrated each Sunday at noon during the summer; Special services are offered on Holy Days. for schedules, call : (503) 254-7371

Free Admission to the Plaza Level except during some special events. For those wishing to take the 10 story elevator ride to the upper level, a small maintenance fee is charged.

Coffee Express - Enjoy specialty beverages and lunches or snacks inside the Welcome Center or in our outdoor garden setting

Tours are available by advanced arrangement.

The Grotto is maintained solely through generous public support of its gardens, art works and facilities.
