USS North Carolina

The USS
North Carolina sits in dry dock in Wilmington, North Carolina.
It has been turned into a tourist attraction which allows those who come aboard to discover, unescorted, the inner workings of a big battle ship.

As we climbed the metal ladders leading down into the bowels of the ship we
passed many glassed-in viewing stations where we could see the actual eyes and
ears of the ship. We passed laundry facilities, the mess and dining room areas,
communications, captains quarters, gun turrets, bunks, engines, propeller shaft,
engineering, gauges, gadgets and artifacts.
The reason there is a mist like quality to some photos is because of the protective glass enclosures which reflected the lighting back onto the film.

This recreation room showed the stark surroundings that the sailors lived in while on board.
There were few comforts and little time for rest and relaxation aboard ship.
