Depression: From My point of View
In the last few days I have learned that computers put out positive ions that can cause depression. I can often spend between 8 and 12 hours per day at the computer screen. This can't possibly help depression so I have purchase an ionizer that will sit in my office near me and spew negative ions into the air to counter this problem.
Another thing I am doing is using full spectrum light bulbs. Until recently they have only been available in florescent type bulbs. I recent discovered them in regular light bulb sizes at the health food store. Why is this important? Many people, including me, are sensitive to light. I have a lot of trouble in the winter or in places where there is no windows or subdued light. I have placed a floor lamp with several full spectrum bulbs in it near my desk behind me so that I can receive the light without glaring on my computer screen. It helps relieve depression for those who are light sensitive.
Another thing I have discovered is SAM-e. ( If you would like to find out more about SAM-e, click on our drugstore.com button at the bottom of the page). I do not take drugs. I feel the side effects can be worse than the disease itself. Since my health is relatively good, I don't need them and I strive to improve my health so I may never need them. One of the things I do, however, is take natural herbs and supplements. I discovered SAM-e after trying St. John's wort. It didn't work for me. I have struggled with depression for years, brought on by stress over a long period of time. A bad marriage will do that to you.
Anyway, I have taken Zoloft before but it killed my libido. I went off it a while back and have been searching for something else that has no side effects. SAM-e was relatively new when I ran across it and though it is expensive, I decided to give it a try. (It's price is comparable to a lot of herbs and herb combinations out there right now). It surprisingly worked in a matter of about two days. I am not kidding, folks. It happens that fast. Some it may take 3 to 5 days, but it was working only after two. I will never stop taking it. I have never felt so good. I cannot see any side effects I am aware of and it not only helps depression, but it also helps rebuild the joints. I am getting two for the price of one.
Why is this important to me? I cannot take the arthritis duo that has condroiton and some other natural supplement in a combination. I am allergic to it. So, the fact that I can deal with my depression while my joints are being helped is a great benefit to me. Zoloft can cost as much as $2.00 per pill. That is $60.00 per month. I can get the SAM-e for $15.00 for a 10 day supply from drugstore.com. It is actually cheaper for me than the Zoloft.
I am not telling people to stop taking their medications. I am telling you that you need to know how your body works. You need to know the options out there and make informed decisions where your health is concerned. You need to know what the side effects of the drugs you are taking are , and discuss them with your doctor as well as check out all the information you can find on the internet about your disease, condition, or drug. You need to walk into your doctor's office with the information you have gleaned and share it with your physician. If you are not satisfied, always get as much information as you can find before doing anything different than you have been doing. Know what you are doing before you take any risks to your health.
My situation and my decisions are my own and are in no way meant to give medical advice. My experiences and my theories are my own and are provided to my readers as information to add to their knowledge only. Each of us must make our own decisions and do what we feel is best for the individual. People with serious conditions should always consult with a doctor before changing any part of their health regime.
Depression is a serious condition that needs to be addressed either in the doctor's office or under the guidance of a good councilor. It is not something that will go away on its own. So, if you are depressed, seek some kind of help. Taking antidepressants, even temporarily, until you can work out a system of controlling it that both you and your doctor finds satisfactory, can be life saving. Always make changes to your health regime under the guidance of a physician. They need to know what you are doing and why so they can be aware of your situation in case any problems arise.
