After learning of the new cave system that is just opening in Arizona this month, (See article on Kartchner Caves), it gave me food for thought. I recently shared with you my daughter's encounter with Bigfoot in the Idaho desert. I have asked myself how a Bigfoot managed to live and disappear from the top of a lava outcropping on the side of a modern highway.

Since I am an avid science buff, I love to watch everything from volcanoes and earthquakes to caving and underwater discoveries. I am aware, living in Idaho, of all the sink holes that appear from time to time on desert farm lands, and of all the possible lava caves and tubes that may very well criss-cross the desert without us even knowing it. It has long been a theory of mine that some large creature like Bigfoot might very well be able to survive and thrive by using those vast undiscovered underground causeways. How many undiscovered caves and bottomless crevices exist in the world today? Many caves, even though discovered, are so vast they have yet to have a human set foot in many parts of the cave systems.

These cave systems are often accompanied by underground rivers that flow through them. They could pop in and out almost anywhere and be totally invisible to us humans who aren't going around looking for them. We are too busying communing with nature and enjoying the hiking and camping to bother looking for hidden caves and cave entrances.

One farmer, in Idaho, has spent every year of his farming life dumping rocks, concrete, anything he can find to fill up a crevice in his farm field. As of this article I don't think he has succeeded. This sink hole seems to be bottomless. Who knows how far down it goes, or what it connects with. But he keeps trying to fill it up.

All animals like to burrow, whether it is in a cave for shelter or by digging it themselves. Our caveman ancestors lived in caves and in the hollows of trees. Why not Bigfoot? We may live in houses but many ahead of us used caves for survival. Obviously this creature is not as evolved as we are, though probably a distant cousin. Perhaps he is our ancient ancestor who never evolved at all, but stayed in his natural, pristine state all these years, while we evolved and flourished. Perhaps he migrated from a different region thousands of years ago, thus missing out on the genetic changes that occurred elsewhere. There are places today where animals, once thought extinct are just being discovered. There are places today, in the Amazon region of south America where tribes, hidden from our more advanced societies, have lived a lifestyle unchanged for thousands of years. We are just now discovering these small ancient bands of people.

So, it is not all that unfathomable that Bigfoot could exist and does. It is just a matter of time before we prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt. I only pray that when this happens we treat the creature with dignity and respect his right to his life, liberty and privacy.
