The following is a summary of an article that appeared in the November/December 1999 issue of the Western Journal of Medicine, Volume 171, No. 3

Nutrasweet (Aspartame) and Breast and Prostate Cancer:

In his article, Dr. Schwarts explains, "I discovered an extraordinary correlation between aspartame (marketed as Nutrasweet and in its generic form) and increasing breast and prostate cancer incidence. My observation occured while I was researching the metabolism of aspartame."

He verifiies my concerns reported in the article I posted on my site about the dangers of aspartame, that it, "consists of phenylalanine, aspartic acid and methanol (wood alcohol)." Dr. Schwarts goes on to explain what happens to it as we consume it and it starts to be broken down by the body and metabolized. He further says, "Upon metabolism, Nutrasweet breaks down into aspartic acid, a neuroexcitatory agent, phenylalanine, an amino acid, and methanol. The methanol is converted to formaldehyde, which then accumulates within the cells."

So, what does that all mean? Dr. Schwarts continues, "Formaldehyde has been considered an inducer of cancer and acts to alter DNA." He includes a graph of breast cancer incidence against that of the rising use of Nutrasweet (aspartame)." He states that "a similar relation was found with prostate cancer." he states that both prostrate and breast cancer rates "are fuve and six times higher in Europe and North America than in Asia and Africa." His reasoning for this is that they have a significatly lower usage of the product.
