: When I was a teenager one of my best friend's father
: claimed to have seen a "bigfoot like" creature
: standing in a ditch at the side of the road near his home.
: As my friend's father was police officer, I don't think
: he would have made it up. He died soon after we graduated so
: there are no details to this story available.
: It is in southeastern Indiana.
Not to pick on you personally, but other logical explanations
exist for such stories, and I include ALL eyewitness reports. We
all have imaginations, and the woods and the dark are spooky
places and our minds can play tricks on us. I'm a lifelong
outdoorsman with vast experience in the woods, but let me tell
you about one of my hallucinations. I was hiking in the Cascades
of WA one day when I spotted what I took to be a porcupine on a
ridgeline about 100 yards away in a very primitive wilderness
location. Now, I have a degree in wildlife resources and critters
are my main reason for being out there, so I whipped out my
binoculars to get a good look 'cause you don't see a porky every
day. I sat and watched this particular porcupine for about ten
minutes as it moved around on a log. Eventually I decided to move
on up the trail in that direction and get a closer look. The
trail wound out of sight until I topped the ridge about 20 yards
from the spot where I first saw the porky. Imagine my chagrine
when I discovered two female humans sitting behind the log! They
looked rather askance at this lone man stalking up on tiptoe, to
say the least! One of the women had a prodigious afro-type perm
working, and was sitting in such way that only the top half of
her head had been visible from where I initially saw her
hair do/porcupine.
I have made numerous similar, if less vivid, misidentifications
in the mountains and I really do know what I'm doing out
there(?trust me?). I have even momentarily mistaken an old cow
moose for none other than Sasquatch, if only for a fleeting
second or two. My point is that a logical person can make
outrageous mistakes when their imagination combines with odd
light conditions, simple fear, etc.
