Jake's Farm Adventure Begins

The orchards and the farmland whizzed by as Dad drove down the windy roads to Chuck's Grandfather's farm.  Chuck was Jake's best friend and he was going to get to spend an entire month with Chuck at his Grandfather's farm.

They were going to help Chuck's Grandfather with chores because his Grandfather had fallen from one of the apple trees in their orchard and had broken his leg.  They would help him do the work that he couldn't do, like feed the chickens and the hogs. They might get to ride some horses in their spare time if they worked hard enough.

Jake could hardly wait to get there.  He kept looking at his wrist watch.  It was the watch Dad had given him when he had turned eight.  He had told him that at age eight he was old enough to learn to tell time and to take on added responsibilities around the house, like taking out the garbage,  weeding the flower garden, and feeding the dog and cat.  He liked the watch but he wasn't sure he liked the added responsibilities.

One of the "added responsibilities" he now had was watching his me, Christy Lee, when  mom was busy in the house.  He would play with me outside on the swings in the backyard or even let me climb up into the tree house, (when his friends weren't around).

We would play Windy and Peter Pan.  I was Windy, of course.  And he was Peter Pan--fighting pirates and saving Windy from the Indians.  We had fun when we were together.  But he kept that a big secret from his friends, who might think he was being too nice to his little sister.

He had explained to me that he had to keep up his image with his friends. So when they came over, he would warn, he might say some things that I didn't like. He might also treat me different than when we were alone.   If he winked at me, that would mean that he was just saying things for his friends sake. I was not to take them seriously.  He told me the wink would be their secret signal.

Anyway, I was a pretty good kid and didn't cause him many problems, except for when I wanted to bug him when he was in his room reading, (something he really enjoyed).  Then he would get a bit gruff with me, without the wink,  so I would know that he was serious about being left alone.

"Will you move over?" he demanded as I scooted over next to him in the car.  "You're hogging the whole seat.  Give me some room to stretch." he ordered gruffly.  I scowled and stuck my tongue out at him.  "I mean it, Christy Lee.  Move over!"

"Ok, ok, I will," I whispered softly so Mom and Dad couldn't hear.

"Is everything OK back there?" Mom asked from her seat in the front next to Dad.

"Everything's just fine, Jake answered as he returned the scowl.  We're happy as sardines in a can."

"It won't be long before we get to the farm.  Then you won't be so cramped.  We had to pack a lot of stuff for a month's vacation for both of you.  Didn't want to forget anything you might need."

"Aw, Mom," Jake replied.  "Men don't need much.  A pair of jeans, a change of underwear, a couple pair of socks, would have been just fine." Mom laughed.

"Did  you bring my Barbies?"

"Yes, Dear.  I think I put them in the Barbie suitcase along with your doll clothes and accessories.  It is in the back there somewhere."

"She brought her whole bedroom," Dad added.  "You would think she was going away permanently. "

"Better safe than sorry, Dear," mom reminded him of the last vacation we took.  We had forgotten a lot of the things we had needed.

"Look," Dad called out.  "There is the gravel road that leads to the farm.  It will only be a moment now."

The farmhouse that was nestled in a small stand of trees.  As we turned into the dusty gravel lane that lead to the main house, Chuck's collie dog ran out to greet us.  Chuck and his Grandfather were standing outside on the porch waving.  Smokey, their collie dog, was jumping and barking as we pulled up in front and stopped.
