Things That Go Bump In The Night

by Christine Bruun

Since early man first picked up a stick from the ground and brought it down in frustration upon a hollow log, (noting that the sound carried for quite some distance), he has used instruments for communication.

Even African villages used drums for communications.  I remember hearing those drums emanating in the distance during dramatic scenes in the movie, "Drums of the Kalahari".

Some sounds carry for miles.  The drums were used as warnings, for passing along news from village to village, as well as for providing rhythm and beat for dances during celebrations and festivities. It could also be a non- visual beacon that leads the hunters home to their villages after wars and hunting expeditions. The drum was often an integral part of any community or social group.

The great apes pound their chest emitting a hollow sound that reverberates and enlists a particular reaction within the social group.  It is used as warning.  It us used as a show of  dominance.  It is used as a threat to outside intrusion upon a specified territory or social group.

There are African tribe called the Maasai who use a loud clicking sound as part of their language.  There are all sorts of clicks and groans and noises used to communicate within ones own group.    In some countries a large belch after a meal is a compliment.

With all the scientific evidence and discoveries that are un-refuted by the scientific world pertaining to language and communication,( that have been proven through archeological digs and research into the written and non written word used by humans since they began),  I think it is safe to say that Bigfoot must use some form of verbal and instrumental communication.  However, at this point lies the debate.

Many professional and layperson researchers, who have either been in the field themselves or heard from others about their experiences, suggest that there is a pattern of sound made by Bigfoot which suggests that he uses a tree to produce a loud sound.  They suggest that it is similar to the sound one would produce when hitting a hollow log with a blunt object.

No one has yet seen this action.  It has been heard by many and documented in the reports collected.  No one knows the instrument used to produce this sound.  It is not known if it is a rock or a branch, or their fists, or just what is causing this sound.

And no one knows for sure what or whom is making this sound.  Right now it is just a theory.

I have asked around about the possibility of it being a bird such as a woodpecker.  However, the woodpecker is not a night bird.  I have looked at the possibility of it being a deer, elk, or moose butting its head upon a tree prior to rutting season when they are rubbing the velvet from their horns. If the sounds were at this particular time of year, that could be an answer.  If not, we are back to our Bigfoot theory.

I have racked my brain to think of all the possibilities for this sound.  Could it be a tree branch in the breeze being knocked into another and making this sound?  Given the reports and the fact that these sounds have been reported to move in some semblance of unity as people move closer to them, that answer does not quite fit, though it must be considered.

It is a known fact that the Ruffed Grouse will beat its wings together and makes a loud thumping sound.  Sage Hens have been known to also do this.  However, they are not night birds.  If this noise is heard in the night it cannot be a grouse or sage hen.  However, daytime events might well be attributed to this small bird, (given that the sighting is in the region of its natural habitat and during the right season).

Most animals will become silent when an intruder such as man enters its territory.  Most animals will burrow into their holes, scurry into the underbrush and stay very still as not to cause the intruder to notice them.  Even birds will become silent at times.  Only those nocturnal animals such as the owl and the coyote, wolf, the night hunters, venture out and will make noise.  Most hunt silently.

I have watched a rabbit in our backyard, who saw my movement from the corner of his eye, sit like a statue for a very long time.  They can move almost noiselessly through their habitat.

I can honestly say I cannot think of another thing that could make that knocking sound under most of the circumstances that they have been reported, other than those I have mentioned.  If anyone has other suggestions or information I would love to hear from them on this subject.  However, with the information I have now, the Bigfoot theory is still very probable and still very likely.  Until someone comes up with something better, I will have to lean towards that theory.

In fact, I would love to report actual experiences where the knocking was witnessed and heard. If you have such information please e-mail me at: bigfoot@cactusventures.com.
