Whistles and Chirping
by Christine Bruun
Throughout the ages man has communicated. At first it was through gesture, grunts, groans, and base noises. It grew in complexity and structure to become the modern languages of the earth.
Still, within the modern beauty of language and culture are nestled small pockets of civilization that have remained archaic and unchanged even in a time and age of science and industry. The key to this unchanged environment...isolation. Whether the isolation is self imposed because of beliefs or because of location, the results are the same.
There are entire third world cultures that remain unchanged even today. These cultures still retreat to their old ways, guarding their cultural linage that regards change as dangerous and destructive. They cling to their beliefs and ways of living while jet planes fly overhead.
Language evolved from need and from assimilation through contact with other cultures. While most peoples use an alphabet system of language, the Maasai have incorporated clicks into their language which make their spoken word unique and complicated.
The deaf use sign language which is, for the deaf, a universal language easily recognizable by all deaf people. The blind use their own universal system created just for them. American Indians used sign language along with spoken language to communicate with other Indian Nations and the white invaders. They used pictographs to tell stories, as did the Egyptians. And since Bigfoot must have a means of communication there are various theories which must be pursued.
Each species of animal has developed its own form of communication, from the great apes to the simple frog. It is unlikely that Bigfoot has developed no communication skills.
The first fact we must consider is that of isolation. Until fairly recently, Sasquatch has lived a relatively isolated existence with only sporadic contact with humans, and then accidentally and briefly.
This isolation was primarily caused by the rugged terrain and the densely forested land within which they reside, not to mention the lack of population within those areas. Few humans, except for the determined hunter, an occasional logger, or a hearty hiker, were lucky enough to encounter one of these elusive creatures.
As the human population grew and the forests were harvested for lumber, there was a migration of the population into the wilderness areas where they could get away from the main populous within the cities. As the people spread out farther and farther, the wild, uninhabited buffer zone between the Bigfoot and humans dwindled. Look at the wolf and the bear for example.
As the encroachment widened into the normal Bigfoot territories, more and more sightings were reported until today, it is almost seems like an everyday occurrence.
However, it is strongly possible that with such little contact up till now, Bigfoot's language has changed little from its original form. Though it may be part human, it is still an animal, (until proven different). It will have very primitive ways. It's language will be limited because of its isolation. There will have been no immediate need to assimilate, (to add words and meanings) to an extent that it would drastically change its language.
Because of its wilderness environment, it would be safe to say that it has probably utilized much of its natural environment. Like the North American Indians, it may have an understanding of its place in the harmony of the earth. It may understand animal language as we never can. It may visualize in concepts rather than in concretes. And it may have few actually spoken words, using sounds and concepts rather than a formal language.
However, before I attach the whistling and chirping sounds to Bigfoot, let me just share this bit of information. Deer whistle. It is a warning. A doe will whistle to their young when they can't see their tails. They whistle to other deer to warn them of intrusion or danger. And, since deer are nocturnal creatures who forage at night in the coolness of the dark where humans seldom are, it would be natural to hear the whistle of deer and be mistaken for Bigfoot. Deer rest in the heat of the day. There would have to be much more evidence for me to label the whistles and chirps a Bigfoot. I can't say either way because I have not heard the sounds for myself.
And as long as I am on the subject, the Mockingbird is a great imitator of bird calls. The one thing I have noticed with mockingbirds is that their calls are loud. They are easily picked out in the crowd. They are overly loud, as if the loudness disguises the fact that they are mimicking. They mimic to mark their territory from other birds. It is their way of trying to keep others away. Perhaps Bigfoot also mimics. We just don't know at this time.
Bigfoot probably uses its natural animal instincts and talents which allow it to function quite well in an unstructured environment. It may even utilize telepathic talents which would give it a greater edge and enhance its ability to survive and remain hidden.
The American Indians used their environments quite naturally and quite efficiently for their needs. They used bird calls, (learned from their environment), as coded communications. They used drums to beat out messages and to celebrate life. They used pictographs to record their history. They saw the world through eyes that assimilated from their surroundings. This made them highly invincible until civilization became too forceful and too technical for them to escape.
Once their isolation was invaded by the whites, the French, the English, the Spanish, they were forced to adapt or become extinct. There was great loss of life before they were able to adapt.
Again, there is a debate going on over possible whistles and chirping noises being attributed to Bigfoot. While this is very probable given their unique history and isolated environment, it is still only conjecture based on theory. Until we can actually experience their communication first hand, we will only guess at it's language skills.
However, by using the bits and pieces of information we glean from various reports, sightings, and evidence, we can begin to piece the puzzle together. We can learn from our ancestors, how they adapted and changed over thousands of years. We can record those sounds we think might be Bigfoot and listen and analyze them for any sign of pattern. We can keep an open mind and understand that theory is just that, a guess based on the limited information we now have.
While theory is neither wrong nor right until proven so, it is a valuable tool in research, for it keeps us thinking, and keeps us searching, and keeps us dreaming that which might seem impossible today. I urge all of us to keep open minds and to gather all information even if we do not feel it is of value, for that one piece may be a key to the puzzle.
I also urge everyone to share information. Information in the hands of people can become an enormous boon to our research. Sometimes we need a fresh point of view. Sometimes even the lay person can see something we might have missed.
I realize there is a lot of territorial bickering and greed involved. There are a lot of people who will choose to horde the information out of misguided need for recognition and financial gain. This makes our job difficult at best.
I would like those who have recordings of what they perceive as Bigfoot whistles and chirps to put them in the hands of those who are simply interested and let them hear for themselves what the sounds are and let them decide the truth from their knowledge. The internet may become a valuable tool for this purpose. We will certainly give credit where credit is due, for those who have worked for the information deserve the credit.
But share it with all of us so we too might understand why so many have heard the sounds and judged them credible. Without the actual information we are but flailing around in the dark or, as a better analogy, we are the three blind men trying to describe an elephant.
