Yowie Film Update
Paul Cropper reported this on October 6, 2000. He relates the following report.
Last Sunday (the 1st of October) several Australian researchers (Tony Healy, Tim the Yowie Man, Neil Frost and myself), and visiting U.S. Investigator Danny Perez visited the site of the claimed Yowie video taken by Steve Piper, a Canberra businessman. The purpose of the trip was to interview the main witness, locate the exact video site and to try and establish the creature's size.
We met Steve Piper at Cotter Dam and accompanied him to the site. The video was taken about 24 km west of Canberra in the Brindabella Ranges, about midway between Uriarra and Piccadilly Circus and roughly 500 meters west of Condor Creek. At the site, Danny interviewed Steve fairly aggressively, but he stood up quite under his direct (American??) questioning style. I was quite impressed with Steve as a witness and heard nothing from him that screamed 'hoax'.
This was also the first time I had seen the footage, and while conditions were less than perfect (I was looking into the tiny foldout screen on a video camera), it looked interesting. The video itself suffers from camera shake and rapid zooming, but does appear to show a large, bulky, dark, bipedal hairy figure limping slowly through bush in a roadside gully for several seconds. I would like stress that the film is nothing like the Patterson film, as there is no clear view of the creature at any time.
Tony Healy used surveyor's measuring equipment to establish distances at the site. The thing was about 46.6 meters from Steve on the southern side of the road when he commenced filming and it slowly walked 23-26 meters while filmed. The group was unable to clearly establish the creature's height, but the general consensus was around 2 meters - in other words, man-sized.
So, interesting but inconclusive. We all await prints from the video, but in the meantime we are left with another short, shaky, ambiguous crypto-video clip. If I was to assign an overall credibility rating to the incident, I would say about 5 out of ten.
Tom Healy is currently preparing a far more detailed report on the Piper film.
